By taking the assessment included in the My Mental Health App I learned what universal character traits all substance abusers share and the progressive nature of the disease. then judged my own substance misuse actions in relationship to the knowledge I now possessed. Once I admitted I possessed the character traits associated with substance abuse disorder I was able to take deliberate action to improve my situation. I have learned to ask myself better questions and received better answers. Questions such as, am I using all the knowledge and personal insight I have gained to stay clean and sober today? Is there someone I can talk with that already knows how to solve the challenges I am currently facing? How can I be of service to another person struggling with substance misuse? One joy of recovery is in being of service to our fellow men and women. It is an easy and effective way of improving our self-esteem. When we help another, whether it is in the workplace, with family and friends or by sharing our own journey of recovery with another person suffering from substance misuse we are renewed and invigorated with an inner peace like no other. We need to give away what we wish to keep. Giving and receiving are two sides of the same coin.
